My resolve to get more balance this week lasted all of a single day. I was at work until 7:30 last night and back at the office 24 hours later. I don't like that feeling-- that you've just barely left and here you are again. Maybe next week will be better.
On the lighter side, tonight I was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi (PKP). This is an honor society that is by invitation only to the top 10% of graduating seniors and 7.5% of juniors. Faculty, administrative staff and alumni "who have achieved scholarly distinction" can also be invited to join-- which is where I come in. I do feel privileged and honored by the invitation. PKP's mission is "to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."
There were two things that made this a good evening. 1- the official university student photographer who sat next to me during dinner. She was really fun to talk to (unlike the other adults at my table). She is majoring in linguistics and can speak Russian and Persian. Wow! 2- a talk by Susan Easton Black. That woman is amazing. Her ability to tell great stories without any notes is remarkable. Her message was that those who find joy in the journey of life do two things: a) they keep the covenants they have made with God, and b) they know who they are and are confident. She shared some great stories from LDS Church history. Overall, a very pleasant evening, even if it was work related.
Life is Good.
